introduction
On this blog, I am going to adventure through the different and individual similarities between the target audiences, contexts and treatments. In great detail i shall analyse how important a radio networks demographic really is and the affects it has. In the brief that we've been given, i will be researching 3 separate speech packages that i will consider and approach to the rest of my group with. I will be doing this research for BBC Radio Cumbria in an attempt to create a show for the station that would lower the demographic.
case study #1 - BBC Radio 1's live lounge
The first speech package that i am researching and hoping to be a potential candidate for our new Radio Cumbria show would be a section of the show alike to BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.
WHAT IS THE LIVE LOUNGE
It is a short section of radio 1 hosted by Fearne Cotton (soon to be replaced) in which artists will be invited or can request (if they have a big enough representation) to then go on and perform some live versions of their songs or even others artists's songs to promote themselves on the second biggest radio station in the UK. These videos then go onto video sharing websites such as Youtube in which they can then be shared all over most forms of social media such as facebook, twitter, tumblr. So alongside being promoted live on the radio, they also get the added promotion thats received from social media. Often when the artists decide to do sing a song that wasn't originally theirs, they get changed and often become more popular than the originals. Some of the biggest covers include artist's like: Imagine Dragons, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.

My reasoning behind wanting this style of section to the show would be to attract lots of attention from musicians's fans and to also get the publicity of actually having artists in our version weekly. As the show progressed and achieved more of a reputation to then attract bigger stars within the music part of the media sector. From that it would grow to hopefully have the same hype as a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge act. As teenagers these days now tend to have a shorter attention span these shows are often only 15-20 minutes long, I feel Radio Cumbria would benefit from the same style of show as it would bring a sense of importance to Cumbria as a county as it's often neglected in comparison to other county's. Also, with the shows being as short as they are, teenagers tend to stick around even if the artist isn't one they usually listen to. This is important as the target audience for BBC Radio Cumbria is much higher than Radio 1's (listeners tend to be over 50 years old). This would mean that the artists it'd feature would fit the current demographic, meaning the artists would be older and more classic than the overproduced world of the charts music.
The next part of my research was to conduct some of my own, so i walked around 3 different locations asking the same question to 30 people (10 people per location). The question was: "Do you think Radio Cumbria and Cumbria itself, would benefit from artists coming to record a Live Lounge esque performance for the station?". I also asked them for their age so that i could refer back to it later on. The minimum age out of the 30 people i asked was 15 and the oldest person i spoke to was 31. A huge 90% of the 30 i spoke to all said quotes along the lines of: "I think it would be great for both station and county to have that sort of reputation so for this reason, i'd agree that it would benefit us all".
Here's how the show would be set out:
1. Introduction to the artist then play a released song of his/hers/theirs
2. Interview with the artist
3. 4 back to back tracks played live by the artist
4. Concluding interview with the artist.

CASE STUDY #2 - Sports sHOW
The next speech package that i will research is related to rugby. I have many ideas for this show which i will state and explain over the next few paragraphs but first, here's why i think this will add to BBC Radio Cumbria. The main reason behind the idea for this show is that Cumbria is extremely enthusiastic when it comes to rugby and a lot of the time it's not on television or radio, so my idea is to broadcast certain Cumbria based teams's rugby games. However, where this becomes interesting is now, I want to have fans commentate sections of the rugby match as this allows the commentary to be much more biased/opinionated/hilarious for listeners.
The downsides to this idea are that:
- it's a lot of time out of the show to be taken up
- enthusiasts may not be too impressed as they may want to listen to the game
- the only vision a listener has, is what the commentators are saying, so if they're aren't doing a good job, the listener won't understand whats going on.
- risk of inappropriate language
- would require a lot of people to go through with the idea
The positives to this idea are:
- It involves the community
- It's a funny concept and would be funnier still, if there was a way people could watch the game but listen to our fan commentators.
Here's how the show would be set out:
1. pre-game analysis with 2 hosts and song
2. fans commentate the game
3. half time analysis and song
4. more fans commentate on the game
5. post-game analysis and song
I would spark the pre-game analysis's discussion by asking my co-host to voice his/her opinion on the two teams and their current form. This is a relatively specific question which then allows us to stay on topic and really state who we think may win the game.
For the half time analysis, I would ask my co-host: "What are your thoughts on the game and/or 2 teams so far?". This allows for us to relate back to moments within the game and talk about players that have played well, as well as the team that's playing best or worst. It also leads into being able to talk about yet again, who we think may win the game and then it'll show the audience if our minds have changed/stayed the same etc.
The post-game analysis would then be started by discussing the game and the two teams as a whole and also who played well and not so well, and what we think can be done better by both teams.
By having these serious discussions/debates outside of game time, it makes up for the witty atmosphere that would be caused by having to fan commentators. This should keep the enthusiasts happy even if they don't like the idea of the fans commentating the game.

CASE STUDY #3 - Movie review ft. listeners
I think that it's been made clear that with my ideas i'd really like to involve the community as i think it's a huge factor when it comes to maintaining and interesting and branching out to a wider audience. For this reason alone is why i've conjured up this idea which i think is perfect for a radio station such as Radio Cumbria especially since community is ever so important on local stations. So, the idea is to bring onto the show, a young person (within the ages of 11 and 18) and put them on with a much older person (over years old) and get them to both review together and debate a film that they've both seen. I feel like this could be a very funny concept especially if the movie was old (example: Charlie Chaplin, Modern Times) and the child was 11. This could make for a very funny comparison between what each temporary host thinks.
The positives to this idea are:
- it involves the community which is a great way to promote and grow as a station.
- it involves films, which is something most human's are interested in and/or like to watch
- it includes members of the audience from inside and outside the demographic of BBC Radio Cumbria.
- it has plenty of opportunities to be made comical which the audience will then enjoy!
- people can call in and the temporary hosts can speak to them and get their opinions
The negatives to this idea are:
- people may be scared of spoilers and a spoiler free notice may have to be made to react to this, if it was to affect the amount of listeners the show had.
- if the audience don't care for the movie they may not listen
- it could be hard to find two members of the community who are willing and/or are nice to each other.
- may be difficult for the hosts to cope with everything going on.
This is how i would set out the show:
1. interview conducted by the host, with the 2 temporary hosts. The a song from the motion picture will be played.
2. movie that will be discussed is revealed and the opinions are stated (which will subsequently lead to the conversation/discussion starting.
3. the host will interrupt at a good time to then play a song from the soundtrack of the film.
4. back to the discussion - new starting point (resets the discussion).
5. agreed or disagreed conclusion between both temporary hosts. The a final song from the movie.
The question i would you use as the host to spark the discussion would be:
"what are your thoughts on [insert movie title here]?"
This is an extremely broad and non detailed question which then allows the 2 temporary guest hosts to go into great detail in their discussion/debate. They can also say only what they want to say rather than myself pushing them for answers. This gives a much more natural flow to the show and will be nicer for the audience to listen to. I feel it is important that every show would be started with the same question in order to have some sort of consistency to the show, so that if the listeners like this structure, they can then know that they'd want to tune in next time.

Overall
Generate thoroughly thought- through ideas for speech- based packages for specific contexts and target audiences showing creativity and flair and working independently to professional expectations
TASK 1 - A & B
Task 1: learners have been charged with researching ideas for a range of speech packages to be included in a specific radio programme with a defined audience. Learners will:
Part A
● Prepare draft ideas in the form of treatments, interview questions and/or scripts accordingly for a diverse range of speech packages. You will repeat this initial process for three different radio stations
● For these three ideas you will create and present basic treatments, interview questions, scripts as appropriate for each package to your peers – asking the question – which idea is most fit for its identified purpose.
Part B: Learners will further explore one of the three ideas and:
● Amend and redraft treatments, interview questions, scripts as appropriate – fleshing out initial ideas with more thought-out research.
● Present the final amended treatments, interview questions, scripts as appropriate to your tutor for final approval in the form of an informative Blog. Demonstrating consideration for treatment, context and the targeted audience.
To achieve a distinction you must:
Provide a range of near-professional speech package ideas that have been generated and elucidated. Their contexts will be appropriately analysed in great detail and will clearly relate to a detailed analysis of audience data in terms of demographics and likely interest.
